According to their terms of service I haven’t violated anything. My biggest issue with Facebook is that their terms of service regarding photos is very vague.  Why can’t they explain the EXACT reason for the violation?  What guidelines are used?  Was my photo removed because the person who saw it was PERSONALLY offended?  If Facebook’s TOS is based on personal opinion then we have a MAJOR problem.  Last time I check there was something called freedom of speech and freedom of expression.  Also, if this photo is deemed offensive then why haven’t any other social networking sites removed it?  Facebook, it’s about time someone calls you out on your incompetence.

Here is a short list of people who were instrumental in the success of my career and this DVD:

First and foremost, my mom and dad.  They have been extremely supportive (hesitant at times though hehe).  My brother, who had to convince my parents at times that I was going to succeed.  Lisa Grigsby, owner of Jokers Comedy Cafe.  Lisa was there from the start.  When everyone else didn’t believe in me she did (even if it was because I brought a lot of people to the shows LOL).  Gary Menke for getting me my first feature gig.  Vince Morris, Tammy Pescatelli, Robert Schimmel and John Pinette (they helped me polish my material and let me work with them when I didn’t have work).  I want to thank Johnny Walker for telling me to submit to Comedy Central’s Open Mic Fight and believing I would be one of 72 people selected for this prestigious competition.   I want to thank Ray Hanania for inviting me to perform as part of the first Arab American Comedy Show in New York and for being so helpful along the way (even when he took me to Jerusalem to perform and I got interrogated for 3 hours! haha).  I also want to thank Maz Jobrani, Ahmed Ahmed, Dean Obeidallah and Aron Kader from the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour for opening the door for Middle Eastern comedians.

Finally, I want to thank David Esrati with The Next Wave (cover design) and Rico Williamson (DVD authoring) for helping me produce this DVD.  Without them I would probably be burning discs on my Macbook and using a crappy cover design.

MOST OF ALL I WANT TO THANK ALL OF MY FANS, FRIENDS AND COMEDY CLUBS (especially Jokers Comedy Cafe and the Dayton Funnybone) THAT SUPPORTED ME ON THIS LONG JOURNEY!

That was very surprising to me that people totally missed the point of the video!  So…. now I’m going to add fuel to the fire about this guy’s ignorance.  My first comedy DVD will be released next week and I am adding some footage from earlier in the show that makes this guy look even worse.  I’m interested to see what people’s reactions will be.  The footage will only be available on the DVD so if you want to see it you’re going to have to email me or leave a comment on this video letting me know you want one.

Tuesday afternoon I decided to attended the Dayton Region Rally…..”rally” may not have been the right choice of words though.  I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be very exciting so I didn’t bring my camera to film for ERRATIC TV.  In retrospect that was a mistake but I’ll get to that later.

Before going to the rally I called a few friends that are actively involved in the community to see if they were going.  Generally, any event they go to is usually productive.  None of us really had any high expectations.  The reason I went was two fold.  First, I felt that I needed to be more actively involved in events that promote Dayton since I have chosen to live here and not move to New York or L.A. to broaden my exposure in the entertainment field.  Second, this was the first event that I felt would really pump up Dayton with some exciting discussion.

I arrived at UD Arena and noticed the parking lot was fairly full. so far so good.

I walked inside and was immediately impressed by the amount of TV cameras and media at the event.  Then, I realized it was only WHIO-TV AND they were a media sponsor.  This threw up a red flag.  If the news was covering this event AND sponsored it, they couldn’t possibly give an unbiased opinion of the event.  This statement comes into play later in this article.

When the event kicked off, I felt like I was at a seminar more than a rally.  I can’t really comment on the speakers because I was still checking out the set up of the event.  I figured if people started cheering, laughing or showing any signs of interest or support I would start listening.  That didn’t happen.

The set up was impressive.

I think there were about 4 camera’s set up in the front, 3 big screens and a remote interview area by the main entrance of the arena.  I’m not really sure why they had that extra set up in the back.  It was almost as if WHIO-TV was pretending this was a huge national event that lots of people would be watching on TV.  Between speakers they would go to the interview area in the back and talk to people and project it on the big screen.  Oh ya…. I counted a little over 13o0 people at the event.

I checked my Twitter and noticed a bunch of people were tweeting about being at the event.  I threw out some comments to see if anyone else at the event had the same thoughts as I did about the event.  You can read my tweets at http://twitter.com/sherifhedayat.  I said things to the effect that the speakers were scripted, there was minimal “rallying” at the beginning of the event and the fact that nothing really grabbed my attention.

In addition to the speakers reading from a script, they photos and videos that were shown on the big screen were very boring.  I found myself going outside periodically to watch the jugglers and the mime because they were interesting and they kept my attention.  I guess my ADHD gets the best of me sometimes.

The speakers talked about how we could bring more business to Dayton and the great things Dayton had to offer like…water.  WOOHOO! Water….really?  That’s how we’re going to position ourselves?

Here’s a suggestion, why don’t we talk about how we can bring more visitors to Dayton so they can support the existing businesses first?  Also, why weren’t there more celebrity speakers?  Kellen Winslow, Sr. was great but we he coaches at Central State….not exactly Dayton.

Speaking of celebrities not from the Dayton area, why was the entertainment brought in from out of town?

The jugglers were great and I even went to high school with one of them but why were they brought in from Columbus?  Michael Israel was AMAZING!  He was definitely the highlight of the show and probably the only reason I was actually happy I went to the event but he was from Las Vegas.

As the event went on people started filing out of the rally between speakers.  I’m not talking about one or two people but groups at a time.  I laughed when Michael Israel was about to come out and paint his first painting.  At this point there were only a couple of hundred people left and some woman that was part of the event tried to block people from leaving telling everyone “You have to see Michael Israel, he’s amazing!”  I’m guessing they spent a lot of money to bring him in since she didn’t want to let anyone leave.

Now to address the point of the media sponsor.  WHIO-TV was interviewing people left and right about how great the event was.  I didn’t see ONE person leaving early get interviewed.  This was when I regretted not bring my video camera.

So now you’re probably saying “Sherif, you’ve made a lot of critical comments about this event.  Do you have any suggestions or solutions?  If you think you could do better why don’t you put on your own event.”  Well, my answer is yes, I have some suggestions and I may very well try and put on another event that is a TRUE rally.

Here are my suggestions:

Talk about things that will excite the general working class.  Most of the things the speakers talked about were already common knowledge to the audience.

Get off the script.  If you really believe in Dayton then speak from the heart.   Make it more personal.

Start the rally with something exciting.  Maybe they should’ve had Michael Israel kick off the event with a painting then do the other painting at the end.

Bring in more celebrity speakers.  Dayton has a long list of celebrities that grew up in Dayton and made a contribution to our city, country and the world.

Last but not least, don’t let the media sponsor the event.  Let them give an unbiased opinion so people can actually see what REALLY happened and maybe they will work hard to create a better event in the future.

Overall, the event was a good starting point but we need to really expand the discussions at these events to cover more topics that will truly excite people.

so how convenient was it that he pulled a stunt that got the entertainment world’s FULL attention last night at the VMA’s?  Well let’s think about this.  NBC  flooded the network with promos for Leno’s new show.  He has a monster line up of guests for his first episode.  So, could it be that the Kanye West incident was actually planned by NBC to put the icing on the promoting cake and make Leno’s first episode the most viewed premiere of a show?

I don’t think Leno would have known anything about it though.  From what I’ve heard about him he’s a very honest guy.   Could this be a sign of things to come?  Look at what else has happened this weekend.  Tennis isn’t exactly one of the most popular sports in America, but this past weekend all that changed….for the time being.  Serena Williams lost her mind on the line judge.  She threatened to shove a ball down her throat??? Ok…I guess people get angry sometimes.  But, tonight my opinion changed.  Federer and Del Potro both argued with the chair umpire and Federer even said S**T  on live TV.

Maybe the ATP and NBC are telling their respective talent to start creating a ruckus in order to get more attention to their respective organizations?

ABC and every other network is exploiting the ignorance and stupidity of reality show contestants.  Even if it could’ve been an easy road they REALITY is that show producers will create a bad situation because it makes for good television.  No one wants to see someone find true happiness.  America loves a train wreck.

Anyone who goes on a reality show without expecting to be humiliated is an IDIOT!  Jillian… REALITY CHECK!  It’s a freaking TV show.  Enjoy it then move on with your life.  Oh ya, one more thing…. you’re probably never going to meet a man worth a damn after your appearance on the show.

If I was going to place a bet I’d say no engagement.  That’s the only thing that would save the reputation of any of the men on that show.

My father once told me that going to school isn’t about the education, it’s about the experience.  If you ask me what I remember learning during school or college my answer would probably be nothing since I don’t really remember.  I wasn’t a very good student to say the least.  I barely graduated high school and college….well that’s a whole other blog that I don’t want to get into.

What I DO remember about school is that I got my butt whipped all the way through high school.  No only that but I was made fun of because I looked like a dork, my grades sucked, I wasn’t very good at socializing and I didn’t dress very well.  Then in college I encountered people from all different parts of the country and world.  What did I learn?  I learned to INTERACT with people.  Something you don’t get through home schooling.  I learned to defend myself physical and verbally.  I learned to overcome obstacles.  I met people that taught me about cultures I had never encountered.

So K12.com claims that they offer more personalized education for people that may not learn well in a large classroom environment.  Ok….well what about learning to interact with people.  What happens when that online education is complete and these kids have to go out into the real world?  They’re going to suffer culture shock.

If this trend continues, children of today will be the hermits of tomorrow.  Maybe we need to work on the structure of our public education system.  Speaking of which.  I moved to the states in 7th grade.  My parents and I agreed that private school was probably a good way of easing into American culture.  Smaller classrooms, better teachers and a better overall education.  The interesting thing was that our 8th grade books were the same ones I used my senior year in high school.  Private school is four years ahead of public schools??  How do we allow a gap that big in our educational system?

The bottom line is that we need to leave online education for college at a minimum.  Kids today need to interact and learn that life isn’t just about learning….it’s about the experience.
